    COVID-19 Youth Safe Return to Exercise and Physical Activity Notification

    As students return to school after exhibiting signs or symptoms of, or testing positive for, COVID-19, it is important to determine how to ensure a safe return to classrooms and activities, including the risks for returning to exercise and physical activity.

    Assembly Bill (AB) 856: Pupil health: COVID-19 Youth Health Information Act addresses the safe return of pupils to exercise and physical activity after exhibiting signs or symptoms of, or testing positive for COVID-19.
    Given the changing environment with COVID-19 , recommendations and guidelines may change at any time. Current guidelines from the recommends not returning to sports or physical activity until children or adolescents have completed quarantine and consulted with their pediatrician after a positive test, including those that were asymptomatic or mildly asymptomatic.

    What do I do if my child or adolescent who is active in sports and/or physical activity tests positive for SARS-CoV-2?

    • All children and adolescents who test positive for COVID-19 should notify their pediatrician or primary care provider. After COVID-19 infection, your child’s health care provider will help determine when it is safe to begin a graduated return to play progression based on your child’s medical history, symptoms, severity of illness and previous level of activity, and whether they develop signs of multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children , myocarditis, or other post-COVID conditions.  A graduated return to play progression will increase your child’s activity level and allow you to monitor any lingering symptoms of COVID-19 infection.

    If your child had a positive COVID-19 test, it is recommended by AAP to get a medical clearance prior to resuming exercise or physical activities, including sports, especially if they developed any signs of chest pain/pressure, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness , decreased exercise tolerance or fainting.
